How do we treat a severely scarred heart? Show summary
A man with long-term coronary artery disease had had a previous bypass surgery as well as multiple cardiac catheterizations, but nonetheless ended up with restricted blood supply to his heart. His myocardium had been mostly replaced by scar tissue, making him unable to pump blood out of his lungs. Diuretics, blood pressure medications, and beta blockers stopped working as well. As a result, he was admitted to an ICU for mechanical support to pump the blood out of his lungs and legs.
